They aren't as uptight as Americans so they have a wider range of topics and don't have to fall back on swearing for laughs.

They are supposed to be extremely reserved people. Normally a Britisher is not supposed to speak to someone not properly introduced to him even if he sees that someone everyday at the bus stop, I am given to understand. With such strict etiquette and stringent manners where else can they get a few light moments except through a little comedy. Comedy born of necessity, we must presume.

i find british comedy hard to follow and kind of weird. monty python for heaven's sake? ick and what about benny hill? double ick i do enjoy 'as time goes by' because it takes place in a normal setting, but the slapstick 'black adder' or 'fawlty towers' stuff makes no sense to me!

I thought there is a general agrement that they have a dry sense of humour....now where does this come from!!!!

Their humor tends to be very dry, and sometimes sarcastic. They dabble in taboo areas, and they aren't glaringly obvious with their jokes, lots of subtlety and innuendo. I prefer their comedy to American comedy. The British comedians don't seem afraid to go out on a limb, and do something taboo or crazy for a laugh.

Because humour is in everyday life over here,you Yanks take life to serious...chill out a bit. The second clip is the best of American Comedy...in my opinion.
