  • I have a Congo African Gray.. she is about fourteen years old and talks a lot ... sometimes whistles but she seems pretty smart in that she does not overdo it to the point of aggravating. She is quiet all night and will not usually start her morning convo until I am out of bed. I would suggest covering your bird's cage (it is the advice most given by vets)when it gets out of hand. There are all kinds of websites you can check out for tips and tricks if you do a search. This is JuJu eating a choco cookie
  • Good Luck with that. Chances are, if your African Grey can talk, he's not going to want to stop! Usually parrots chatter away more when they are happy. You can get toys for your parrot at websites like http://www.parrottoys.co.uk which will keep him entertained and hopefully quiet for a while U wish u bought a goldfish now, don't u? lol
  • I also have an african grey named Lucky who is also alot to handle. I tell all my friends it's literally like having a 3 year child. I got him when he was 5 years old and although he was quiet at first he soon wouldn't stop talking. Most greys will copy and say the word and phrases they hear most and that includes volume. My Lucky was in the same room as a parakeet I was talking care of for a little while and pretty soon it became like I had two chirping parakeets. What they hear is what they'll say and if it's loud they're loud. One thing that can help is talking softly around him and when he's too loud try and ignore him as best you can. Eventually he should start talking softer if you do. When he does reward him with a treat like a peanut. Also making sure your bird is never bored will help. My grey has his cage open all day and walks all around my room while I am watching him. My grey LOVES to destroy cardboard boxes, it will keep him occuppied for an hours, and it's cheap! But if this doesn't help just embrace his loudness and be ready to live with him for the next 60 plus years!!! Good luck! hope this helps!
  • LOL! Can't be done. Unless toys can distract him, you're stuck. And be careful what you say or the noises you subject him to as he will just parrot them back to you and loudly if he wants you to appear LOL! We once had such a noisy bird, a Moluccan lory, we used a thick zip up sleeping bag to put over th cage, tube like! And we could still hear him. What might help is getting him more toys and playing with him more. He's bored and wants attention. So give him something to do beside yell for attention.
  • Give it a peanut
  • Don't feed your grey a cookie much less a chocolate one, come on use some common sense.
  • Our family grey is VERY loud he also have had 6 children grow up screaming and playing around him. We found the best thing was to put a cage on our deck and have him there on sunny days. (make sure there's appropreate shade and food and water for him though and it's not too cold/warm)but for problems indoors i would suggest a spray bottle. our birds getting very good about screaming now and all you have to do is show him the spray bottle and he will shut right up. Goood luck!!
  • They are like children, you spend lots of time trying to get them to talk and once they start you just want them to shut up :)
  • Rearing African parrots is not just an easy task to undertake. It requires valuable knowledge about the bird's characteristics and behavior while learning how to protect, preserve and improve it at its best. Proper handling and rearing by the African Grey parrot breeders will help improve the quality of the future generations of these specie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7UPBqbLnUns
  • Put up a picture of a roast chicken next to his cage.
  • My African Grey is 19 and has not been covered since I learned that it is not recommended. Think about being blindfolded and having to listen to what is going on around you. Greys to have the intelligence of a toddler. The advice from munchie is a good one. Mine knows when I flash the hand massager (it flashes colors) that she has gotten too loud. Sometimes she gets loudest when I am on the phone or chatting with company. Just like a toddler they want the attention. If you give them a special treat before these kinds of activities. It will let them see these times for you as special time for them and not try so hard for the attention. But you must just understand that the nature is to make noise and have fun, so just be sure that you are willing to deal with it for the next 20 years or maybe find someone else that would enjoy his company more.
  • Well, that he is in the cage is the FIRST problem. You haven't had him out of the cage, or either you haven't taught him any manners! Instead of taking the time he needs with you, you're all done with him. I hope he bites you. You obviously do not have the temperament for him. Or a baby. Or a toddler. Geeez.....just sell the poor thing.
