I thought about it and came to the realization that the world if full of elves...or is it selves...oh, yeah, same difference

Your self will be carried on in the varied perceptions of the minds of the people that knew you, often times many philosophers and geniuses are never credited till after death, where their image is made of the peoples self biased views, Often times olden celebrities were never what we imagined.

Until you die you won't know the answer to that question. You can have beliefs, opinions, ideas, conjecture, hopes, faith..but you will not actually KNOW until you experience it yourself. Happy Monday :)

One train of thought is that we are in this lifetime to learn or experience certain things. I hope when we leave this lifetime we are able to take what we learned and add it to all the other lifetimes we have had. So, I hope it does change. :) Hi Rickster!

The identity of the self, known only by the self and even then, I think is always moulded and fashioned by the perception of others, as history and memories are wont of doing. Inevitably, in the end, this maintenance of the identity is usually biased and built by what people want to believe, whether it was good or bad, despite the technicalities which may point an ominous and gnarly finger at what little truth had ever been exposed. Unless some sort of form of spiritual transition exists, then the identity dies with its envelope, as nobody ever really knew it in life to begin with.

Ok, here's what I came up with. It is impossible for the self to persist unchanged. See, part of our identity and how one's self is seen is gathered from the way our physical body looks. Like it or not if we are all honest with ourselves looks always play a roll somehow! So with the loss of your physical self ultimately the self as a whole will change. Without the physical getting in the way we will see ourselves/others will see us in a whole new light. Does that make sense to anyone else? lol

lives on in the people that will remenber you good or bad

Well, first let me say "I haven't a clue, to be honest", but I think if I'm understanding the question correctly, the self and the soul are essentially what you're asking about, right? If so, then I still don't really know, but my husband actually has a theory about energy. Since everything is made up of energy then so are feelings, experience, thoughts, memories, etc... and energy doesn't go away, but rather recycled, then our souls/self or whatever you want to call it, is just recycled and continues to exist; Though it seems that it couldn't be possible to persist unchanged, but constantly changed by the joining and rejoining of other souls/selves... There's more but I feel that I am just rambling now.

do any of us really have the answer to that question, most probably not. however, personally, I believe we carry on for eternal time, basically we are time, we are the beginning , the middle the.............
-
The identity of self dies with us. Without some form of physical body, there is no self. We cease to exist.
-
50% change, 50 % remains same

I believe one's "self-identity" persists eternally, but do NOT believe it's unchangable. What would be the point in being unchangeable? That would be a permanent death.
-
Ouch! Brain freeze!
-
I believe that our identity (self, consciousness, soul, etc.) is a synergy of our complex brains. When we die, it dies with us.
