Try using Media Monkey. I've never used it, but have heard it works with any iPod and it's free. http://www.mediamonkey.com/

If you're using a Macintosh, there is a program you can use called "Audion." It will recognize an iPod, allow you to import tracks from CDs and will enable you to load those tracks onto an iPod. The company that makes Audion stopped doing so a couple of years ago because everyone was using iTunes. It's not been updated in a long time as a result and if by some chance it's not compatible with newer iPods, I wouldn't know about that. Audion will not permit you to buy tracks from Apple's iTunes Music Store. Here's a URL for Audion: http://www.panic.com/audion/

itunes is free and will let you add mp3s to your ipod without buying *any* music from apple. I use gtkpod to back up my ipod to my laptop (fedora core 5), but I have to use my windows machine to manage new songs I buy from apple's store. Check out sourceforge.com and search "projects" for "ipod" for other alternatives.

You could just use winamp, if you plug in your ipod it should bring up an icon that tells you to select the type of ipod that you have and then you should be able to put songs on your ipod by either transferring music from others or by importing a CD. This way the program does not make your computer slow and does not take up as much space.
