  • Take the filter out and give it a clean, usually works for me.
  • If the filter is washable you can clean it and put it back in. If the smell is still there you should replace the filter and you might spray a small amount of Lysol through the return as it is running to help kill germs that are causing the smell. If these tips don't work you need to check and see if the the inside coil (evaporator coil) is coated with mold or bacteria that can grow on the cooling fins and tubes as a result of all the moisture in the warm air condensing on the coil. If it is built up with mold, clean it with a cleaner that will kill the mold and bacteria. Check with your hardware store. With a clean filter and clean coil, that should stop your problem.
