To me, a person who is emotionally shallow is a person who is incapable of experiencing certain feelings (sadness, etc). Another indication of this is a person who is not able to show compassion towards those in pain or in times of sorrow.

Shallowness to me is when they seem to have no emotional depth. People who tend to be more flat in emotional response and calculating rather than feeling. I think that at least some people like that are so because they have been traumatized in some way, while with others it may be genetic. It also may require a combination of the two. The point is, they cannot help it in most cases, it is just 'how they are'.
