From what I understand they can run for a short distant around 20-30 mph but they get tired very fast and have to stop. The distant is determined by the health of the animal.

They have been clocked at the highest..35 miles per hour(short distances)..ya aint gonna out run one.:)

If they really work their legs, especially by running up flights of stairs while wearing heavy boots, and lose the belly fat they can easily go 50 mph! :p I was at this animal park and I saw where a cheetah cop had pulled over a speeding hippo in a 50 mph zone. :)
