Religious people say that the universe is intelligently designed (that is,reflects a higher intelligence) and therefore there is a God. Does the universe appear to be intelligently designed?

Yes, which is why I believe that the universe itself is intelligent. And this fits in with the ideas of most religions, that God is in everything. I believe, further more, in a collective consiousness. For an abstract interpretation of this idea read Iain M. Banks's Feersum Endjinn.

Yes it is. Even here on earth the way the human body works seems a little to convenient. But the mysteries of the universe will be unknown for a long time so let's just give the credit to "God" shall we? There really is no other answer than that, who wants to go without answers?

No... Someone who thinks the universe looks intelligently designed should look at the size and insignificance of the Earth as compared to the rest of the universe. This should pose a couple of theological problems for most believers.

Everywhere I look I see order and universal laws. Our galaxy and all the others run like some fantastic precise clock. To quote Wernher von Braun, who had much to do with sending astronauts to the moon, "The natural laws of the universe are so precise that we have no difficulty building a spaceship to fly to the moon and can time that flight with the precision of a fraction of a second. These laws must have been set by somebody."

Scientists can synthesize proteins suitable for life. Research chemists produce things like insulin for medical purposes in great quantities. The question is, how do they do it? Certainly not by simulating chance or natural causes. Only by highly constraining the experiment can chemists produce proteins like those found in living things. Placing constraints on the experiment limits the 'choices' at each step of the way. That is, it adds informataion. If we want to speculate on how the first informational molecules came into being, the most reasonable speculation is there was some form of intelligence around at the time.

I don't think that that sentiment is reserved to religious people only. Many scientists also believe that the universe is extremely well thought out and designed...
