What is the origin of the phrase "take a step back"?

    I must disclose that I don't have an exact knowledge, as to the origins of this particular phrase. But if I may make a some educated guess...
    It would probably be a rather short amount of time - around a few hundreds of years, after Bipedalism has developed in the early ancestors of the human species; which was approximately 4 to 3.5 million years ago.
    How ever, The time of the language skills developed enough, in the human race, to form this phrase is unknown; due to the lack of sufficient Empirical evidence found in fossils. But it, most likely was sometime, between then and now.
