it can be harmful but the radition emitted is so minut that it doesnt matter.
-
There are studies being done that are studying how harmful it is. Thing is, it IS harmful, we just don't know to what extent. Did you know you can pop popcorn with your cell phone? http://www.koreus.com/video/telephone-portable-mais-popcorn.html
-
The probably is they really don't know for sure if it is or not. Sometimes it takes years and years of repeated use for problems to appear.
-
I don't think it is harmful. The microwaves is a non ionizing radiation. It will make the water molecules vibrate more, but other that increasing your body temp slightly it won't cause harm.
-
A severely damaged microwave could kill you, so the "radiation" is dangerous. But radio waves seems to do so at high levels only, as far as most reserch can tell.

Radiation
-
Its in small enough amounts that its fairly harmless. IIRC its not really any more than the background radiation we are subjected to every day just by living here on Earth.
-
The actual amount of power emitted by any of these devices is very small (with the exception of damaged microwaves). None of them are high energy "ionising" radiation in which a single photon can do damage. So the only thing they can do is slightly heat your body. In the case of the mobile phone, the maximum energy it can emit is 1/4 watt, which is less than the energy falling on the top of your head on a cloudy day. The other things have similar limits. So it is simply not enough power to do any harm by any *known* mechanism. Of course, there may be unknown mechanisms - but you coud say that about anything.

Microwave radiation can burn us if we come directly in their path. Thats why microwave transmission towers are built tall enough to ensure that no one comes in their path, among other reasons such as to increase their reach to the next tower. For domestic microwave ovens too special gloves are provided so that we don't burn our hands while putting in something while it is switched on. Cell phones can and do damage our heads by their RF - radio frequency emissions. Try using a cell phone far away from the tower so that you get only very weak signal strength. Hold it touched to your ear and within a few minutes you will feel the phone getting heated up. First the ears, then the brain parts and then the eyes on the side you are holding the phone gets heated up. If you continue talking with weak signal strength and heating up of the instrument one half of your head will feel as if it is burning. Only blood circulation can remove the heat and it will take days for the head to reaturn to normal. The trick prevent radiation damage is to use mobile phones: 1] Only where signal strength is strong. 2] Keep the instrument as far away from your body as possible while using it. 3] Use the loudspeaker felicity wherever possible and speak in to the microphone from a distance of 6". 4] Use earphones as far as possible. With precautions we can avoid microwaves from affecting us. But that doesn't mean they are harmless. 0 Pts Rate Answer flag Comments (be the first to comment) Avatar Pixie soon to be Mrs Francis Nov, 11 2008 at 11:42 AM What does this have to do with the Welsh and Breton languages? Avatar subybanu Nov, 11 2008 at 03:03 PM Pixie and Brian I: This was an answer I typed out and posted for another question radiation and radio frequency damage asked by Mostodon is Meastro-don who has asked this question too. When I posted the answer some 7 hours back to the right question only the first word 'Radiation' of my answer got posted into the correct answer. I do no know how it got posted in its entietrity under this question. Some Broad Band or AB computer error, I must believe. The same reason your car exhaust isn't harmful to you. We simply don't get enough of it to do any measurable damage.
-
In a nutshell, because it has such a low wave frequency and it occurs in such small amounts.

were all gonna die anyway, who cares.

It's not gamma radiation. No one really knows yet that it's ''not harmful'' either. In fact there are studies that say otherwise yo...

Here's one for cell phones - http://skeptoid.com/episodes/4117 Here's the FDA's article for microwaves - http://www.fda.gov/cdrh/consumer/microwave.html Here's a NY Times article for computers - http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=950DE2DB113CF933A25751C1A96F948260 Now, there are plenty of "scare" sites out there, usually selling a shield of some sort. Don't fall for them.

It is to a certain extent. Cement hurts us as well. So do airplanes. A lot of other things do too. Basically, you take in a certain amount of radiation per year which can be O.K., and all of our daily radiation (EVEN IF YOU LIVE NEXT TO A POWER PLANT!!!) fits within that number (most of the time, of course)
