I don't think they are all scoffed at. Only those who got their political power being widows of former ruling party chiefs command somewhat lesser respect. The women politicians who made their presence felt on their own are highly respected all over the world. We have had some really great visionary women politicians. Even where cartoons and caricatures are concerned they are shown no lenience and are treated at par with their male counterparts. The 'scoffing at' you refer to must have happened 100 years back.

I don't know about politicians per se, but I do know that there are several women presidents around the world. It seems to me that if they were scoffed at then they wouldn't have gotten as far as they have. Check this website out. The first one are women presidents and the next one are women prime ministers.
