I would disagree with you that monogamy is entirely a social construct. There are two possible mating strategies - the monogamous and the promiscuous. Both are available, and used, by both sexes, though biology favours the former for women and the latter for men (though only slightly - both strategies work for both sexes in some circumstances). Someone is therefore a cheater if, and only if, they have explicitly entered into the conventions of monogamy. Those conventions are social constructs, but they embody an underlying reproductive choice - to go for the monogamous, all-eggs-in-one-basket approach rather than the promiscuous, take-it-where-you-can-get-it approach. In any relationship, both parties should be on the same one of these alternates.
