Why is it OK for a man to be overweight and unattractive but women are judged so harshly if they are the same?

I'm not so sure it's o.k. for a man to overweight or unattractive. From what I hear women talking about...most women want a man who is somewhat in shape and takes care of himself.

because the traditional image of what a woman should be in our society is young and beautiful, whereas men are judged a lot more on their job, car etc. than how they look. i heard once that attractive women earn up to 20% more than unattractive women (although i cant think where from!) think of news broadcasters, yes a lot of women have moved into this field compared to 30 years ago, but they are all quite young, wear makeup, jewllry and have no wrinkles- whereas a lot of the men are hideous! I think there is too much pressure on women in our culture to look good. so much advertising is aimed at women's appearance, women spend a lot more time and money on their appearance than men and the current trends of cosmetic surgery are worrying and damaging. however, i think there is a growing pressure on men to conform to the be attractive, slim, look virile whatever bandwagon- but this isnt progress! so i agree with what the question assumes, but i dont think it's ok!

I do not agree that a man can be overweight and unattractive and not judged harshley. But as a wowmen you very harshley judged if you may be overwieght and unattrative. From my knowledge I beleive that this happens because attractive wowmen are usaully populuar with alot of guy friends. When that female or females do not like the unattractive girl they guys will agree with her so they will keep there popularity or to try to impress her. Because they might think she'll do something with them like sex. This just has been past down and that is why wowmen are so harshly judged.

I wouldn't say that it is ok for a man to be overweight and unattractive. The statistics on the impact of weight and attractiveness on income hold true for men, as well. However, there is a tendency in our society to showcase young, thin, attractive women as the ideal. In fact, many of these women are actually underweight. I also see couples in the media (movies and television) almost always have the male with a younger and more attractive female. I think these factors exacerbate the problem, but there is an underlying difference in what attracts women to men as opposed to what attracts men to women. Studies show that men are more visually aroused, and women weigh personality and stability more heavily. Whether this is because of social conditioning, biology, or a mixture of the two is open to debate.

Huh? Being an overweight and unattractive man, I can very honestly say that I am judged quite harshly for it, even moreso than women twice my size by some. Indeed, I've been so harshly treated by enough people that I've become somewhat militant about combatting "size-ism": the last socially-acceptable bigotry.

well im a guy, im overweight, and some would say im unattractive. But i never hear women say anything about it. I think it's just that some men are just jerks that can't keep their comment's to themselfs. I say, skinny may be sexy, but big is beautiful.

Think of this in primitive terms: The caveman desired an attractive woman because her lack of physical flaws made her ideal for the production of good offspring. Meanwhile the cavewoman desired somebody who was going to be able to provide and to protect, characteristics that looks alone couldn't size up.
