  • You should find a room-mate and share expenses... why should you burn through your money so quickly paying the entire rent bill.
  • It all depends on where you live. In Omaha it'll last a long time. In NY City*, it'll last about 8 months. * answer amended
  • Thats plenty to get started, but keep in mind 20,000 goes quick, dont go out and buy the most expensive stuff, and the room mate idea is tricky, if you do get one dont let them know how much money you have. Also make sure they can and will pay their own way. You can learn alot from Judge Judy and Judge Joe Brown...lol
  • Do you have a job? Remember there are leaches out there. People who don't work and use you to get through life. When I first moved out, I realized the little things like toilet paper.
  • When my husband and I got married (he was 18, I was 19) we had $3,000 ONLY between us. But we both had jobs! We saved up and bought our first house. Spend your money wisely and don't buy what you can't afford. $20,000 is a tremendous start for you.
  • If you have a job, it's definitely enough. If not, you're gonna have to make a lot of sacrifices. First, you'll need to find a cheap place to rent. Like a max of $1000 per month including utilities. For your first year, that will take care of $12,000 of your stash, leaving you with only $8,000 to live off of for a year. If you can go easy on food, ride a bike everywhere you go, live without health insurance, and not go out anywhere that costs money, you just may make it through the year.
  • When I moved out I had.. lemme think.. maybe $500...
