  • Much of ancient religion originated in ancient Babylon. This city of renown was located along the Euphrates River on the Plains of Shinar approximately 540 miles E of Jerusalem and some 50 miles S of Baghdad. It became a world power around the year 645 B.C.E. Well over a century after the Flood of Noah’s day, the city of Babel (later called Babylon) was built around a tower—a project evidently promoted by Nimrod. This Nimrod engendered in his associates a spirit of rebellion against Jehovah and a desire to seek prominence for themselves. (Genesis 10:9, 10; 11:1-9) Triads of gods were prominent in Babylonian religion. There was the triad made up of Anu, Bel and Ea; another included Sin, Shamash and Ishtar. Additionally, images filled Babylon’s places of worship. All of this diverted attention from the fact that there is only one true God, whose name is Jehovah. (Deuteronomy 4:39; John 17:3) The qualities and conduct attributed to their gods, together with the use of lifeless images, gave many people a distorted view of the Creator. See also—Jeremiah 10:10, 14; 50:1, 38; 1 Corinthians 10:14, 19-22. The Babylonians believed that death was merely passage to another kind of life, but this contradicted what God had told our first parents. Greek philosophers enlarged on this idea, saying that humans have an immortal soul. The Devil’s first lie was that if Adam and Eve disobeyed God, they ‘positively would not die’ in the flesh. Now people were being told that what lived forever was an inside part of them that they could not see. This false teaching led to belief in hellfire, purgatory, ancestor worship and much more.—Genesis 3:1-5; Ecclesiastes 9:5, 10; Ezekiel 18:4. Babylonian religion also included the practice of astrology, divination, magic and sorcery, by means of which people have sought supernatural guidance that could be used to enrich themselves and control others. ( see Daniel 2:27; Ezekiel 21:21) How common these practices are today, though all of them are warned against in the Bible. By engaging in them, people have played directly into the hands of demonic spirits, who exact a cruel price for the favors they grant.—Deuteronomy 18:10-12; Isaiah 8:19; Acts 16:16; Revelation 18:21, 23. Really then, the ancient practices and beliefs of those ancient Babylonians had much effect on modern religions.
  • Ancient religions originated pretty much where ever there was ancient culture. Religion has always been an important part of most cultures and there have been countless numbers of them throughout history. The oldest known religion has recently been traced to what is now Botswana. The artifacts found regarding this ancient worship are around 70,000 years old. The oldest religion that is still in practice is Hinduism and many contemporary philosophies and religions share much of the basic principles set down in their texts, which also happen to be the oldest known books in the world. I've included a link for the Botswana archeology findings: http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/wireStory?id=2690112
  • Oldest religion?Let me tell u how the concept of workship started. It started from fear. The men lived in caves in the old stone age feared the forces of nature and wild beasts. It is the fear of the powerful forces of nature which made men workship them. Workshipping the nature would have started in the old stone age itself. Vedic religion of aryans, which was considered to be the oldest one has all these concepts. It is from Vedic religion that the hinduism was derived. Both are almost the same.

  • From Adam and Eve. They told their kids, who told their kids, etc. in a long game of Telephone. Pretty soon the prophecies of Jesus rising from the dead became Mithra and Osiris. The Father became Zeus, and Hercules his son. I suspect Odin really was a powerful warrior king, but the Thunderbird and Trickster coyote of the Americas sound very familiar to Christians with any historical background.
