  • I think this quesiton can be divided into two sub-questions: 1) Why do people start smoking? 2) Why do people continue to smoke once they've started? People start smoking for a variety of reasons: curiosity, peer pressure, a new image, to feel/appear grown up, to rebel, etc. They continue smoking for a few primary reasons: nicotine is a mind-bogglingly addictive drug, they're afraid of putting on weight if they quit, they're used to the feeling of holding a cigarette and the physical act of smoking. Never having smoked myself, this is based solely on observation and speculation.
  • I smoked for 5 years because I liked it. I knew it was bad for me, but then again so is eating fast food and I still do that on occasion even though I know it is bad for me. The real question is "why do people like it?". I liked it for a lot of reasons. I like the high of the nicotine, i liked being a smoker for awhile, I liked the social aspects of it, I liked the relaxation of stepping out and taking calming drags.
  • Because it is addictive and they seem to sense that having a cigarette will relieve life's stresses, even if it is only for 5 minutes. And by the way i smoke, and i realise i am an idiot for doing it.
  • I do smoke and have done so for 15 years. In stressful or exciting situations it does help to calm the nerves a bit.
