Help answer this question below.
Let France, Germany, and Spain start paying tribute to terrorists. Let Iran destroy Israel. Let China start running the world. Start paying tribute to North Korea.
A lot of the reason that SOME countries don't respect us is because they are under the impression that they can talk with someone who's sole objective is to kill you. What would happen if the US left this world right now? Utter Chaos. No one else has guts to stand up to anyone but the UK and Israel. Spain already surrendered to the terrorists. (If you don't belive me what do you call pulling out of Iraq immediatly after a terrorist attack? Thats giving them what they want and surrendering to them. NOW THEY KNOW THEY OWN SPAIN and can get Spain to do whatever they want because Spain is too afraid of them.)
I agree with Painful Ginsu. Although, I think one of the worst offenses the current Administration has done to hurt US foreign relations is that they simply have refused to talk with other nations on equal terms or with respect if we disagree with their positions. The Bush White House has been running a pissing contest with people they don't like.
Dialog and diplomacy have gone out the window. All that seems to be employed is posturing and nation- and leader-bashing edicts from the White House. I think once the evil-doer this and evil-doer that language is dropped, we'll probably get a little more respect.
Of course, that's just a beginning. There's along way to go from there.
It would be helpful to vote out Bush (and his kronies) from your electoral system. Outside nations see your president as stupid, ineffective and corrupt. I am not saying that is my opinion regarding Bush, just the way you are viewed.
We in other countries do understand that the American people are not the American administration.
The world will probably never "respect" us. We are arrogant. We are fat. We are materialistic. We like loud music and roller coasters. There are alot of people in the world that will always hate our way of life, no matter what. Pulling out of Iraq and finding a way to stabilize the country is NOT going to change attitudes around the world! Despite our many flaws, we are still a great country. We have to always strive to do what is right as a country, even if that means others will fail to "respect" us.
Good, but difficult to answer question.
I think it is going to be a LONG time before much of the world respects the USA again, unfortunately, no matter what "we" do.
Maybe if we worked on OUR country more and helped out OUR old, poor and helpless in the USA that might show that we have other priorities other than telling the world what they can do or not do within their own countries. I am not saying we should cease to be humanitarian all over the world.
I am saying we make people dislike us often when we force our political agendas by force on people out of our country. I do not believe in allowing genocide or starvation to continue without helping, but we go way beyond that many times and ignore many things that I think are more abhorrent and should take priority.

You're reading Next to pulling our overworked soldiers out of Iraq and finding some impossible way to stabilize that country, what do you think is the next best thing that America can do to gain respect again in the eyes of the world?

I'm sorry, but it seems like this is a vastly over-simplified view of the complexities of global politics.

I don't think so. Do you think somehow that the world would be in better shape if America where all of a sudden to vanish from it? What part do you think is over simplified? The idea that you can talk to people who want to kill you? Or do you think I'm just being too mean by saying that Spain has already surrendered to terrorism. Pax Americana.
