Help answer this question below.
See an attorney there is a wait for a number of years based on the offense, plus you have to pay, NO your probation officer does not probably know, you need a lawyer that specializes in these cases, in New Jersey there are a handful of things that cannot be expunged like murder, rape things like that you have to check based on your area, but after a certain amount of time an if you are not a repeat offender almost all felonies can be expunged. Good luck with everything and moving forward in your life it is not easy and very frustrating, and just for your info many states protect convicted felons from discrimination (unfortunatley not mine) but see a lawyer nobody on this website is going to be able to help you it's your future and after reading many of these post most people are very uninformed about this topic which is too bad because it can be discouraging
Call your congressman. I was working on Capitol Hill when someone called with a related request. I worked in a wonderful office with a real constituent focus and we made lots of calls and talked to different people to try to get the process moving. Unlike anything with a lawyer, there is no charge for asking your Congressman for help. Worst case scenario is they say no.
You asked two questions. here is one answer to satisfy both.
A felony conviction can never be erased from your criminal record. if you were convicted of the charge, your record is forever.

Felony expunction isn't available in many states, and the states where it IS available have pretty strict guidelines as to the types of crimes that can be expunged, etc. Only forty states allow expunction of ANY kind. Convicted felons are not in any protected group according to any law regarding discrimination. Employers can refuse to hire you based on your convictions, and landlords can refuse to rent to you as well. Criminals are not a protected group in ANY state.

Actually its called the RCOA or the rehabilitatd convicted offenders act and it was passed in 1974, it provides that any licensing (which many occupations require)authority cannot discriminate or disqualify an applicant on the basis of a conviction of a crime or disorderly person offense, except in the case of public employees convicted of offenses touching on their public offices or crimes relating adversely to the occupation for which the license is sought.

The RCOA WAS indeed passed in 1974, but in the UK. We are talking about US laws here.
