  • Frankin Delano Roosevelt and Truman held office for 20 years, from 1933 to 1953, for the Democrats, while there have been two spells of 16 years for the Republicans: 1869-1885 (Grant, Hayes, Garfield, Arthur) and 1897-1913 (McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, Taft). However, the longest period for any party was the 28 years held by the "Democratic Republican" party, between 1801 and 1829, through Presidents Jefferson, Madison, Monroe and Adams. It eventually split into the Democratic Party and the Whig Party. For more information on it, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democratic-Republican_Party
