A few easy things for starters: Turn the A/C off! Inflate the tires to nearly the tire manufacturer's maximum recommended pressure. Remove excess weight from the trunk. Accelerate slowly, and start slowing down early. Combine trips, and start with the furthest destination first, to give the car enough time to warm up. When it's time to get new tires, get low-rolling resistance tires. There are other, more extreme measures you can take as well. Between these steps, and some of those more extreme measures, I get up to 48 mpg in my 2007 Corolla when I can leave the A/C off.

I know you're asking about changes to the car, but seriously the best way to get better gas mileage is to change your driving habits. My brother gets about 45mpg out of his old Saturn, which is about 17 more than it's rated for. Having a manual transmission definitely helps.
