There's a few that spring to mind. I found "The Turn of The Screw" by Henry James quite eerie, and most of Edgar Allen Poe's stories. Poe's writing can be clumsy and overblown, but no-one can write a scary story like he could,- "The Black Cat" I think is his best- I actually shuddered reading that as a full grown adult. The best ghost stories I think are the ones that leave you unsure whether what's happening is really paranormal or whether it's just the product of one human character's disturbed mind- the not being sure makes it seem more real somehow.

A friend of mine was in England with his dad standing in front of a cememtery that was over 100 years old waiting for a bus, my friend said his dad told him later that evening that while standing there he looked over into the dark graveyard and saw several men in black trench coats standing around, I thought this was strange not scary but strange.

The true stories that I've heard from my family: wet footsteps leading into an abandoned house, none coming out, it hadn't even rained yet...but was getting ready to storm. My father (a young boy then) went to shut the upstairs shudders and saw a hand wiping steam off the other houses window and a smiling man with black teeth. Cops were called as my family watched this house. Noone came out of the house and the cops searched every room, noone was ever found.

Dancing Aaron. A couple makes a vow to stay together forever, even after death. Aaron, the husband, eventually dies, and his wife, after some years starts seeing other men. But every time she gets comfortable, Aaron's corpse comes back, he's naked, and starts dancing in front of the new man. While dancing, his limbs come off, and splatters blood all over the place. This was specifically implied in the story, and details to the gore and blood and all were quite underlined, to show us just how gross this was. So, the men always end up leaving the women because of this, Aaron is making sure she keeps her part of the vow lol.
