I have always had a fascination with guns. When I was a kid, my mom wouldn't let me have any toy guns, but that probably only amplified my interest. While I have never fired a real gun, I do know a fair amount about them. I like reading about them and I like looking at pictures that I find on the internet. I don't really have any interest in hunting, I don't even like the idea of fishing! My interest is with the military and their service weapons. I use the information that I gather from the web and from service men and women I meet and apply it to airsoft. It's a game kind of like paintball, but the guns used are replicas and they shoot small plastic bbs rather than paint. I also use airsoft guns for target shooting. There is a league up here in Canada which mirrors the IPSC.

Firearms are sought by people for hobby and for home/self protection. Hobbies related to firearms are competetive target shooting, run of the mill target shooting, hunting, and just plain collection or investment (there are many guns that are quite rare and valuable). Some people keep a gun handy in the case that their home is invaded, and some carry a pistol on them wherever they go (36 states have concealed carry permit laws). I grew up in the country, on a farm. I have been around guns all of my life, from hunting as a kid and young adult, to being an infantry soldier, to presently being a police officer. I have personal firearms in addition to issued, and I like to go shooting, it is something I have fun with. I do have a pistol that is fast becoming a collector's item, a Colt .44 Magnum revolver (Anaconda model). I've seen it's worth stated at anwhere from $800 to $1100. I paid $500 for it, so it's been kind of an investment.

I have found them fascinating. Historically the development of firearms parallels the development of manufacturing, metallurgy and, to some extent, chemistry. Then there are the competing growth patterns of armor versus projectile penetration power. I happen to find many guns visually attractive. Many artisans and craftsmen over the years have devoted incredible time to making and decorating fine firearms. Many have historical significance, some to everyone and some to individuals (i.e., my grandfather's military rifle). If you happen to enjoy hunting, they are practically indispensable (yes, you can hunt with other means). And, they are fun to shoot.
