  • It is the other way around.
  • They have more to worry about and less truth on their side
  • Because many don't hold deep opinions or values. They merely spout what they hear on the radio and Rush. This makes them feel insecure when the going gets truly rough. . That said, I know there are many conservatives for whom the above doesn't apply. I'm one of them. So please don't bother telling me. :-)
  • Well, conservatives don't like change....which their name clear states. They fear that liberals are assaulting their "values" with their evil "principles."
  • Because "conservatives" and "liberals" correspond with the two choices in the Prisoner's Dilemma. Liberals think that trusting everyone to do the right thing is more efficient. Conservatives assume that the other guy is out to screw him. They are both right. Anyone who is not familiar with the Prisoner's Dilemma should go look it up right away.
  • I've also read a study where they found that "conservatives had less secure attatchments formed to their parents as infants." But as anyone who studies research in science can tell you, no matter what data you get, it's up to the researchers to interpret it - and sometimes they come up with ludicrous or irrelevant explanations. If all you're going by is this study, which hasn't yet been replicated, how are you so sure that this is the "truth," which you seem so adamant about conservatives lacking? I for one don't believe that Liberals are any more inclined to know truth than Conservatives - both sides are equally full of BS in my book.
  • because we are more intelligent. hee hee. hee haw.
  • Based on the article, I wouldn't say that conservatives are frightened more easily than liberals. I would argue that conservatives tend to view things through a prism of good and evil, most of which is derived from Judeo-Christian teachings, and choose to preserve and defend that which they believe is good. Liberals, on the other hand, question and challenge the wisdom of these "old fashioned" values and seek for change. They are trying to do that which they also believe is good. I'm not saying that liberalism is always bad or conservatism is always good. Change is very often a good thing when dealing with things that are bad. Some "old fashioned" values like slavery needed to end. In that case, liberalism/change is a good thing. Conservatives today would say that the path towards the relatively new liberal value of gay marriage will destroy an inherently good institution, that being traditional marriage, and are therefore trying to prevent that change from happening in society. In this example, conservatism/no change is a good thing (according to conservatives). Obviously liberals think the opposite. So really, the debate here between boils down to two simple questions: What is good? And what is bad? The articles states "Though the Science study's authors cautioned against an overly broad interpretation of their findings, the results suggest that fear leads to political conservatism." It continues "Threatening situations do indeed seem to increase people's affinity for politically conservative opinions, leaders, and parties," said New York University psychologist John Jost". I don't necessarily disagree with what they say in this study. Some people probably do gravitate to conservative values when they fear their world is changing too fast. But to simply say that conservatives scare more easily than liberals is off base.
