Stock in a company is a virtual item too, you know. If they broke into your online brokerage account and stole your stock, would you want them arrested? Hmm, thought so.

I do actually. Someone who would do the virtually would probably do it in real life if left to think they could get away with it.

Actually they stole something that has value, if not substance. It makes sense. So does the sentence. A fine would have substance, while the time they are performing community service has value.

If the victim paid real money for the virtual items and those items were stolen using illegal tactics (like hacking) then I could see the thief doing real time.
