Andromeda is nearly 2.5 million light years away from the earth.

Are you crazy? We live in the Andromeda galaxy. It's the Milky Way that's 2.5 million light years, or 5.6 parsecs.

... the edge that is nearest Earth is just over 2.2 million light years away, and closing ...

Roughly 2.4 million light years (the distance light would tavel in a year) and is also a neighbor along with our Galaxy and a Local Group of Galaxies in our regien of space. Oh, and Andromeda, which is a much larger galaxy than the Milky Way, is headed for a collision coarse with us, and will collide way before our own star (sun) has exhaused it's hydrogen helium fuel conversion and died. Don't worry, the distance between the stars is so vast, that even a collision with a galaxy much bigger than our, head on, wouldn't mecessarirly be felt in our regeon that earth is located on within the Milky Way, (the "habbitable zone, located approximately two thirds out from the center) so you have it. Far away, but not for long. ;=
