  • As far as I know, it originated in the mid 1600's with Oliver Cromwell. Cromwell was a puritan.He is said to have deplored vanity and the way in which artists often flattered famous people when they painted their portraits. According to tradition, Cromwell told an artist painting his portrait that the picture should be completely honest and include his warts and any other facial blemishes that he had.
