A little of both. Educational for children and sad for the animals unless the animals are in such poor survival needs, that living in the wild could mean sudden death.
-
Eh... I guess they are both. For the most part they are treated well though.
-
kinda both...

I bring the kiddos to the zoo because it brings a smile to their faces and therefore mine. I've not been to a zoo where the animals look to be mistreated. Most have been there all their lives so it's all they know anyway. Now circuses on the other hand, whole different story...I refuse to take them to a circus.

I don't have a problem with keeping animals for our own amusement, so "sad" doesn't register with me, per se, unless the animal doesn't have enough room to move around, so we can be properly amused. Oh, and educated.

Zoos are kind of awesome. My friend went to a zoo where a monkey stole his glasses and his watch and wore them. That's just comedy
-
Sad.
-
educational that place is the good life

It depends. Some zoos are wonderful facilities that create large habitats for the animals and are well-trained in their needs. Other places simply prevent animals that are meant to roam in the wild to enjoy the lifestyle which would be best suited to them. In that case, humanity has exercised superiority over other creatures and stomped on their ability to exist in their natural environment peacefully. I love the zoo, but I definitely think about this.

I have only ever been to two Zoos. I watched the racoons on my second visit and they spent all of their time trying to undo the locks on their cage. Very sad. The vultures were in an enclosure where, if they wanted to fly, they could make maybe two wing flaps. The Polar Bear was so hot and bored that it just walked back and forth rocking it's head. The gorilla just sat with his back to the crowd and covered his back with a piece of sacking. That was enough for me. I have never been back to a zoo since.

After going to Africa, it was hard to look at zoos the same way. While I know that they are educational and entertaining places, I can't help but feel like we've kidnapped these animals and need to take them home;)
-
They can be educational for those who are interested. They can be sad and imprisoning for the non-human species that are forced to live their.
-
I think educational. Most of the time, at least for many animals, they were bred in captivity, so their "homes" are all that they know. The habitat that humans have provided them are the only places that they have lived, so there really isnt anything that they can miss. I guess one can argue about animal instict and all, but I think zoos are mainly educaiton. I still feel kind of bad for the larger animals though, and sad, but zoos teach us a lot of things.
-
It is. You are practicing specism. Other species have children also. And humans are animals also.

I took a friends daughter to the zoo a couple years ago, she was 6 years old. Even though I was trying to come to terms with the idea of the zoo at that point I thought she would be young enough to enjoy it. We were standing watching the penguins, she was looking at them and said to 'me they look really sad'. At six she even saw the pain in their souls. We have a great zoo here and the animals are well loved and taken care of. As much as I love being able to see them I know that it's out of selfishness. They shouldn't be plucked out of their natural habitat for our viewing pleasure, even the ones who grew up in a zoo and know no other life I'm sure still are haunted by that empty feeling inside of not being where they belong and not knowing why they feel that way. I've thought alot about this over the years and hate to admit it cuz I love the zoo, but I'm going with sad.

I think zoos are both sad & educational. With them, you can teach people about the value that animals have but to do so, you have to put them in an environment which isn't right for them. No matter what zoos try to do to their habitats, it will never be like living in the wild. Still, I do like zoos that having breeding programs for endangered species. I think those are necessary.
