  • Clean and tighten the battery terminals.
  • Either your alternator or voltage regulator has gone bad or the battery has gone bad and is not holding a charge. The other possibilty is that the cable clamps aren't tight or the terminals are filthy and a good charge from the alternator simply isn't being received by the battery. Be sure they are clean and tight.
  • It could be that your battery terminals are dirty and not making good contact. Probably, however, your battery is bad. The battery could have run down because of a problem in your charging circuit. A good auto parts store can help you check both.
  • The first 3 answers you got were good. If you aren't comfortable working on a car, take it to an Autozone or similar. I've found them to be helpful. They will test the battery and alternator (alhough it may have to be off the car) and I've found them honest and not just trying to sell new parts.
  • The starter can also cause a clicking sound when the bendix smacks against the flywheel, but doesn't have enough power to engage... that could be as a result of a weak battery, bad connections, faulty starter soleniod, or the starter motor itself.
