  • Michael Jacksons music is EPIC Him, himself? He's not so epic.
  • As a musician myself, I disagree. While I do think he was a good dancer, and could sing okay, but that's a lot of people. Did he write his songs? To be honest, I don't really know, but I doubt it - it was his siblings who played instruments (other than the voice), and not him, if I remember right. And he did a couple that even I liked - Billie Jean and Beat It. It's worth noting that Eddie Van Halen did the guitar tracks on those two. People just assume that the artist created the song, and this isn't always true. Rick Martin's "La Vida Loca" - Desmond Child, TATU's "All The Things She Said" - Elena Kyper If you really want to talk about a great songwriter, and keep in mind I'm a rock/metal musician saying this, and not really a fan, just observing objectively - Barry Manilow, and I'm completely serious. Michael Jackson was very lucky he enjoyed the solo success that he did, in my opinion. I always liked Earth, Wind, and Fire better anyway:) And Living Colour, and Robert Cray, and...:)
  • No i dont think so.
  • Michael Jackson was a top notch performer in his day, but I'd hardly consider him one of the greatest artists of all time. He's also probably one of the most prolific child predators of our times...and he's gotten away with it because of his cleverly designed public flamboyance.
  • I don't. He was never one of my favorites, although I did think that "Thriller" was extraordinarily creative. I think age has a lot to do with it. Us older folks don't get so involved with the music and musicians as you young folks do! Happy Wednesday! :)
  • You're very welcome:) The drums are my primary instrument, I also sing (baritone), and I play the guitar but I'm not great. The same for the piano:) I also have a Celtic whistle that I can't play just yet:P
  • Everybody needs a little Michael!!
  • He sure was popular and he sure made money
  • Eh no. I've never been a big fan, always thought he was way overrated.
  • Personal life aside, I think he was a great performer. One of the greatest of all time...maybe.
  • He is quite talented, no doubt about it. But saying he got "bad press" is like saying Satan isn't a sweet guy. MJ is a pedophile and should be locked up. Imagine what his poor children are going through right now.
  • He's a great dancer and singer, a fantastic entertainer. Greatest artist of all time? If he is, than USHER is a close second. So I will have to answer NO. Although I am a HUGE HUGE HUGE fan of both.
  • Really? You people think a man the people call the "King of Pop" is overrated? From mowtown groove of The Jackson 5 to his solo-break out in the late 1970s all the way to the pop-rock beats of early 90s Michael Jackson broke barriers and was constantly at the top of his game. By the way, he did write his songs. I hate when people dismiss the achievements of artists just because of their popularity, or maybe in Michael's case, their unpopularity.
  • I would agree Michael Jackson is one of the greatest artists of all times. He sings well, he dances well and he can combine his singing and dancing very well. It is not easy to have the ability to harmonize these two talents to keep his audience entertained.
  • Wow. It really depends on how we choose to measure. If we choose number of albums sold, I'm guessing top 5, after the Beatles and Elvis. Of course, this may not be a fair comparison, since they've been selling albums for twenty years longer. Today, Elvis has sold somewhere around 1.2 billion. Let's see where Mikey is in another 20 years - we might be suprised. If we measure personal taste, I'll take Roger Whittaker for my 15 bucks.
  • I agree! I remember MTV back in the good old days! MJ was the King! I have always like his music and talent. How he chose to live his personal life I don't agree with But who am I to really judge!
  • I was never that crazy about him
  • i agree. he is Bad, that Man in the Mirror. all those reporters need to Beat it, because they Won's Stop til they Get Enough
  • He was a great entertainer from an early age....very strange person however.
  • Well if he raped my kids I would not consider him to be a great artist, but since he has not I think he has some great songs, I don't think he is one of the greatest artists in history though
  • I agree.
  • Agree. His freakshow-ness doesn't distract from his body of work.
  • I liked him when he was 10... After that, not so much.
  • I disagree. He's a performer, not an artist. His songwriters deserve the praise. Also I believe that the press was quite good. It was his actions that were bad.
  • i agree very good music :)
  • Oh man, I never knew that! That makes total sense - Toto were serious musicians and songwriters. And the Thriller album! The big one! LOL "Hold The Line" is one of my absolute favorite songs, and I liked Jeff Porcaro (drums) too. Well, I guess a person can say one thing about Michael Jackson - he was smart enough to hire the best like Eddie and Lukather!
  • I never really understood why he became so popular or famous in the first place. To me, and call me a heretic, there is nothing particularly brilliant about his work at all.
  • Hell yeah.....he's the man (minus all those child molestation charges)
  • I totally agree.
  • Who cares if he has "supposedly" made mistakes. He is one of the most amazing artists ever in my eyes!! People that used to like his music but no longer like it because of his bad publicity are extremely shallow. I still love his music just the same, and always will :D
  • I agree. I give him credit for making his songs, but I realize he may not have done so. I have heard and read nothing about anyone claiming to have written for him, though I have heard that perhaps Michael wrote songs for his sister, Janet. I like her music too. I believe it is quite possible to enjoy someone's music and not like them personally, especially with what they have done AFTER writing and performing the song. I feel that way about Elton John too. I don't like some of his publicized choices, but his music rocks.
  • I agree. As a performer, he is one of the best; but as a person, not one of the best.
  • No problem:)
  • My answer to this question is basicly in the comment I left for grasslander, but other then that: Yes in my opinion Michael Jackson is the greatest or at least one of the greatest artists ever. The press is annoying. I'm sick of reading about other people's dirty laundry. They go too far and lie like there is no tomorrow. What are this reliable sources that they always say they get their information from and why the sources never have names? I would realy like to know who theese so called reliable sources are. Also the smart use of the word "ALEGEDLY" that word alone screams that they spread rumors and do nothing but speculate.
  • Katerina you're obviously a fan of his, and in the know - which I am not, and never claimed to be, as hard rock and metal is my musical sphere. It's very true that many solo artists prefer to only sing on stage; the thing is, plenty can barely do that, let alone play any other instrument! LOL And this question is, after all, not a quiz, but a question of opinion. My answer is still disagree, even with the new facts.
  • Prince? Jeez. He's maybe the only guy I like less than Michael Jackson... Although if you wanna know who I hate, and I mean really HATE - The Strokes...don't even get me started...:P
  • Used to be. Now, not so much.
  • I so agree...his music is still awesome
  • He is one of the greatest artists of all time yes. His time is past though, others are here now that will fill the spot for the present.
  • Don't worry about it:) I'm glad you see that I wasn't claiming to know "anything", in this case:) LOL Of course, we all feel compelled and passionate within our sphere, that's only natural:) And yes, opinions are as different as snowflakes - just not as pretty:P
  • Well... not still...
  • Who cares if Michael had a lot of bad press? I don't know why people are so gullible as to continue to believe the press is telling the truth all the time. Whatever gets them money or ratings is what they write, so you do the math. Michael was absolutely one of the greatest artists the world has known, and there's nothing the press can do about that much to their annoyance.
