Because we can only study them from afar. They only happen once, so a lot of study is based on working backwards from the evidence if their remnants. New ones do not seem to give much warning before they pop.

I was not aware that they were hard to study. What makes you say that?

1) they are pretty rare. 2) they happen pretty suddenly - by the time we notice one, it's usually all over.
