When they neared the place where they had gotten caught earlier sounds best to the ear. But I can't say for sure. I hated English class.

Well darn it I don't know. To me all 3 seem awkward because I have never used gotten.. It just isn't in my lexicon. I'm sure the middle is wrong - that's a split infinitive. The other 2 I'm not sure.. but if I substitute "on Tuesday" for "earlier," which should be an acceptable substitution since both are time references, the first becomes: "When they neared the place where on Tuesday they had gotten caught...". Gut feeling: wrong order. So I like the third one. I'll be interested to see if an English major (or the like) posts a definitive answer.
