Why is there a Miss America and a Miss USA?? Is there a difference besides the title?

Miss America is a non-profit college scholarship program which includes a talent competition. The Miss America competition began in 1921. Miss USA is a for-profit owned by NBC and Donald Trump. It does not have a talent competition. winners of Miss USA go on to compete for Miss Universe. The Miss USA pageant began in 1952.

Miss USA was created in 1952 when the Miss America at that time refused to pose in her bathing suit for publicity pictures. Catalina, a sponsor of the Miss America pageant, pulled its sponsorship and created a parallel pageant that would ensure partcipants that would always pose in bathing suits if need be. Whether that's still the case since Catalina isn't the company that owns it anymore, I don't know.
