Who wrote the song "Pretty Paper" that was a hit for Willie Nelson, and what is the story behind the song?

    Willie wrote it in about 1961. He was living in Ft.Worth. There was a large department store downtown called Leonards. A blind man would set out on the sidewalks nearby and sell paper, pencils, ribbon ect. to make an income.
    I myself can recall buying things like this from a blind man on the streets of Greenville, Texas during the 60's.
    Out support of the disabled has improved greatly.

    he wrote the song based on a little black beggar in hillsboro, texas sitting outside the kresses department store. he saw him as a young man in 1953. i am also from hillsboro and i also remember the same little black, crippled beggar. i was only five years old in 1953 but i remember him as well. willy lived in the next town about five miles south of hillsboro, abbot, texas. his mother shopped at the same little store as my family.
