One show does not mean that they are trying to compete with comedy central. They just are trying to attract more viewers, and know that the main cable news stations can incorporate some comedy into their news just like John Stewart and Stephen Colbert do night in and night out.

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart is one of the highest rated shows on TV now...CNN has actually been talking about doing something like this for quite some time.

I doubt it. Comedy Central doesn't have a monopoly on comedy, and current events comedy (formerly known as satire) has been around for decades if not centuries. Sometimes I'm not sure Comedy Central even knows what comedy is.
