3 individual choices maximum , but some additional choices in codecies that are listed as HQ do not use up a slot and as such do not count towards the limit. Check your codex to see if you have any of these.

Some scenarios dictate the max/min number of units you can get. I've seen a few of these, but don't have any uploadable at this time. 'Standard deployment' template says that you can only have two max, but sometimes you'll have more, less or none. It depends on the kind of game you're playing at the time, really. But be warned: HQs are expensive and powerful, but they can easily be overwhelmed by a bunch of Troops. I've made that mistake when I rushed my SM Force Commander (Almost 300 points) at a squad of Tau Fire Warriors (150 points, give or take). Got 10x strength 5 shots to the face... rolled badly for saves. Needless to say, I died.
