    Depends on the country. I know that here in Australia, you are legally allowed to defend yourself or another person by utilizing the minimum amount of force to overcome the force that the attacker is employing. That is to say, if someone hits you, you can hit back. However, If you cause Grievous bodily harm, you have to make a case that you had reason to fear for your life or fear that the attacker was going to cause GBH, as this is otherwise deemed excessive use of force. There is, as far as i am aware, no law that allows you to kill someone, once that happens, it's up to a jury.
