  • Your debts do not become your fiance's debts simply because you marry. They are your obligation alone. Your fiance's concerns are probably as much about the financial concerns -- being able to make the student loan payments in a joint household. If your student loans are federally guaranteed, I suggest you contact the US Department of Education and ask them about their alternative loan repayment structures.
  • I used to work in Student Loans. If you get married and die, your husband would not be responsible for the student loan. All he would have to do is send in your death certificate and it would be taken care of. If you get married the loan would remain in your name and they would pursue you for payment not your husband. It would effect your credit rating not his.
  • He's not legally responsible, but is morally responsible to a person who has to deal with her debt! Will your debt always come 1st when finances and quality of life are concerned?
