  • I believe it was an invention of the fathers of the cathlic church as was limbo which they have now decided against. Read Dante "Purgatorio"
  • Catholics thought it up - no Biblical (or Godly) origin can be traced, unless you try to twist scripture to explain it. There's heaven and there's hell, no in-between. There once was a place called 'Abraham's bosom, that existed until Christ set free the saints there, at which time they resurrected and ascended to heaven. There is no such thing as prayers for the dead - Jesus himsef instructing, "let the dead bury the dead, go instead, and preach the kingdom of God". There is no prayer to be offered up by any other name than the name of Jesus, - addressed to the Father in the name of Jesus. No ritualistic "hail Mary's". No other atonement for our sins than the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. No other repentance than the plea from the sinner - to God Himself. Anything else or any other way is false. Jesus said' "I am the way..." "no man cometh to the Father, but by Me". God said it, that settles it. Read the bible. Do not follow any man.
