    I had a Kawasaki Ninja 500 that sat for 2 years, did the same thing. I took the carbs apart and cleaned them and it worked like new after that. Gas is crap today since they do that "cracking" to get more gas from crude. It seems to crap up carbs quicker.

    as it`s backfiring i think it`s safe to assume that it`s not a fuel problem
    check your spark, i had coil problems gave similar problem
