One of the things you could do is write her a beautiful letter, giving her hope. If they're a family that believes in God, you may want to add a little prayer. If she ever feels she needs to read it again, she can. It's difficult to fight without hope. Make sure it comes from your heart. Your boyfriend will appreciate that you care. There was a classmate of mine who suffered from a 'terminal' cancer. Even though I didn't really know him at first, I visited him constantly. I was determined to keep him and his family positive. I wasn't ashamed to ask questions, researching for better understanding, and at sometimes I'd prepare some food for his family to give his mum a break. He ended up surprising everyone 4 years later and beating it.

Just be there for him. Don't pretend there's nothing wrong but remember it's about him and his mom, not you. If he wants to talk, listen. If he doesn't want to talk, let him not talk. And if he needs some space to be with his mom while she's dying, let him have it.
