contact your student loan carrier. ask them if it's too late to apply for a deferment. If you can get one, it will put your loan back into current status and get rid of the default status. Then KEEP IT UP. If you find you can't pay it, contact them before it's do for another deferrment. You can defer for at least 10 years if you qualify and then do interest only 2 years, etc. you first have to see if they will let you apply for deferrment.
