Windows is great if you like games and viruses and don't mind the odd crash or three. Apple's Mac OS X is great if you like photo / video editing or music.

Vista is great with the updates, XP is rock solid and very compatible, but certain games are locked out (and it limits your ability for certain newer hardware devices). Apple's OS is similar to Vista, but not as compatible. It's pretty much able to do anything you can do on a PC minus some smaller apps and most games. You're also stuck into limited hardware configurations. If you can afford a new mac with an intel processor you can always dual boot with OS X and XP, best of both worlds :)
