Very basically, it explains certain phenomena that classic physics cannot. One example is how certain energies have discreet steps, or quanta, and cannot have an energy level between those steps. Another is it helps explain how a wave and a particle can behave in the same ways. Yet another is the uncertainly principle, which states that it is not possible to simultaneously know the both the position and the momentum of an electron or other particle.
