The only thing I could that that is happening is either attenuation or false signal reading. I don't know many services that run at 54.0 Mbps. So I'm assuming your computer (laptop I'm assuming, same idea for a desktop though) is reading a full signal and assuming that it's the highest your card will take. Noting that wireless-G will go up to 54 Mbps, that's what I'm guessing you're working with. The other problem could be signal attenuation, which is basically stretching your signal out. You could be too far from your wireless router. Move closer if at all possible, or find some tutorials for extending your range using wire or aluminum foil, I've seen both. I'd say it's probably the first solution though. My other desktop always says 100 Mbps when I run a 3 Mbps service into the wireless router. As long as your internet isn't running any slower, you shouldn't have a problem.

I am on my laptop, using the built in antenna. The wireless router is only about 5 feet away from where I usually use the computer and I always get excellent signal. It always starts out with 54Mbps then after about 30 min it'll be down to 48Mbps, then about 24Mbps, Then about 2-3 hours later 1Mbps and internet wont work at all. After I restart the router, or the computer, or repair the connection it all starts over again.
