Is the fuel pump running when you turn the key on? It is in the fuel tank. I would try to squirt a touch of starting fluid in the air intake on the engine and see if it fires or attempts to start if so then most likely you have a fuel pump that has quit on you. they are not to bad to change even though they are in the fuel tank, I would also change the fuel filter as well.

Change fuel filter.

If you can hear the fuel pump engaging, then it is probably not the fuel pump. I have a '95 Tracer 1.9L and had the same problem and it was my "timing belt"! You can check this by loosening the timing belt cover, so it is not touching the belt, the crankshaft, and the camshaft. If someone is helping you, have them turn the motor over while you stand there and watch the timing belt (keep those fingers/hands away from area & cooling fan). If the belt does not turn then it is worn/broken! If no one is there to help you, then you can do it yourself by making a straight line (white marker/chalk) across the timing belt and the camshaft. if the line does not match up after repeated attempts to crank the vehicle, then it is a worn/broken timing belt.
