In my house I installed drop ceilings in the basement so access is easy, no damage done. If your ceiling is sheetrock you'll need to be making some holes to gain access. You'll definitely want a snake. It will save you from drillin more holes in the sheetrock. If the sheetrock is directly attached to the joists and you want to cross the joists you'll have to drill a hole through each joist, lots of holes there. Another option would be to run the wires through the attic. My home is a split-level and with the drop ceiling in the basement I have two options available (thank God, I've done a LOT of electrical/cable/data/phone work to this house
