Well, I probably don't have the best answer for you, but whenever I see text messages or text message jargon, I think of the book "1984" and Newspeak. I think it is dumbing down our culture and society.

Text messaging is ruining our communication skills. It's handy when you are in a meeting and can't talk, but we're giving up developing great relationships for convenience.

As a former teacher, I think it's a lot like passing notes...and I think it's a fad, a passing marker in our IT infanthood, like dial-up, then wifi cable or like telnet, then email, IM, etc., and eventually it will be all videophones, just like in Dick Tracy, or maybe virtual hologram phones. I think any dumbing down is partly due to video instead of instead of reading; visuals instead of thinking. However, I am not sure if it is really dumbed down...many were pretty stupid to begin with, long ago, but were isolated so their ignorance or stupidity was not visible.
