In person-centred counselling, could someone please tell me if someone is thinking can they be feeling at the same time and where would empathy go?

    There is not and can not be any separation between thinking and feeling. They always take place simultaneously. Empathy is present whenever two people are communicating for the purpose of mutual benefit.

    We can actually be thinking and feeling at the same time but sometimes we tend to rationalize in an attempt to escape our (painful) feelings. A person-centred therapist would be empathic and try to connect with the feeling behind the rational thought processes expressed as a defence. But with advanced empathy, the therapist would also be aware of the client's defences and sensitive - not try to break them down too quickly etc.,
