The popularity of the symbol comes from the 1977 single by the UK punk band, Sex Pistols, from their song, Anarchy in the UK http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anarchy_in_the_U.K.

I doubt the teenagers latch on to much more than the concept of being without government (to have no 'bosses'), but the A symbol belongs to a genuine and serious (and anarchic) political system called Anarchism. Look up Anarchism instead of anarchy.

It is a fad. In fact the fad started 30+ years ago, so this is a re-birth of the old fad. In short, most people who sport the anarchy symbol don't know what it means or have a distorted view of what it is. It is somewhat akin to people in the west wearing T shirts with the image of Che Guavera -- they don't know who he was or what horrible things he did. If you were to take a poll of the students in your school to find out what their thoughts are, I would wager that many don't know what the symbol stands for, some will know that it stands for anarchy but will not really understand what anarchy is, and none would wear the symbol if they did not think it was a desirable fashion statement. Most people who vocalize the desire for anarchy don't really want anarchy. If they articulate what they want, they describe autonomy without few restrictions but they don't describe true anarchy.

They do it because their friends are doing it. Middle school and High school has a lot of that. I doubt most of the kids even know what it really means.

Teens like the thought of anarchy because they see it as meaning a state of having no authority figures. However, the A with the circle around it is the symbol for Anarchism. Basically, it's just a form of government in which there actually is no government, and individuals rule over themselves. It's a nice idea, but I don't see how it would work....that's why it's relegated to being on the backpacks of high school students.

Anarchy means "Without Ruler" or "Lawless"
-
So "everyone" is in favor of a world of no authority, survival of the fittest, where rape, robbery and murder are acceptable norms.
-
Anarchy is the state of having no law. From an- meaning no- and archos meaning -ruler. People who think they want anarchy usually do so because it means no laws applying to them - or at least not the ones that they find irksome. But anarchy means no laws at all i.e. no laws against rape, murder, theft, fraud etc. Thus, a return to mob law and the rule of the strongest. To wear a badge supporting anarchy is, in my view, a very childish proceeding which sows a total misunderstanding of how the world works. One stage better than believing in Father Christmas and the Tooth fairy. For a real-world example of true anarchy, look at Somalia. And ask what happened in Mogadishu when the US Army met true Anarchy,
-
Complete absence of government. Kids did the whole anarchy "A" symbol with a circle when I was that age too.

Anarchy is simply defined as the total absence of an organized government. No law, no rules, every man for himself. The problem is that much like perfection, anarchy is impossible. Nature abhors a vacuum, if there is a vacuum in terms of governance, someone will eventually fill it, who will more than likely establish a military dictatorship. Ironically, what the idiots at your school don't even realize is that as soon as two individuals agree that they should create anarchy, they are no longer anarchists, because they in effect would be an organization with a common goal to establish a system, which is counter-intuitive to the entire concept of anarchy in the first place. Any pursuit of anarchy will only result in tyranny.
