Answer: more than likely when the first car was built! The records differ on that. Some claim that the first automobile was built by a Frenchman in the 1800's.

Mary Ward (1827 - 1869) is given the dubious distinction of being the first person to be fatally injured in a car accident. This occurred on 31 August 1869 in Birr, Ireland. She fell out of her cousin's steam powered car as it went round a bend and was run over, dying of a broken neck. Wiki has a good article on her and the Leviatian of Parsonstown.
